These three mysterious characters are mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, which tells of the journey from the East to Jerusalem, in search of the newborn King of the Jews, bringing him three gifts. All the gifts of the Magi have a meaning and refer to the double nature of Jesus, the human one and the divine one: the gold because it is the gift reserved to the Kings, the incense as a testimony of adoration, the myrrh (used in the cult of the dead) because Jesus is man and as man, mortal. From the gifts of the Kings to Jesus, comes the tradition of bringing sweets and toys to children: this tradition crosses with the legend of the Befana.
